Style LOVE: Nancy (Mum)

Next up is Nancy, also known as my mom (or mum if you’re from the U.K.). We’re similar in many different ways, including looks and our tastes in clothing…mostly thrifted clothing (as is evident by the fact that everything but her necklace was bought from either eBay, a garage sale, or the Salvation Army). I love her very much, and I’ve found her classy workweek style to be inspiration and always sophisticated. Here’s the breakdown:

Turtleneck: eBay (I.N.C.)
Houndstooth Jacket: Salvation Army
Pants: Garage sale (Gap)
Boots: eBay (Cole Haan)
Necklace: Claire’s

1. Describe your style in three words.
quirky, vintage, perky

2. What are some of your favorite places to shop, and who are some of your favorite designers?
Other than garage sales, thrift shops, and eBay, I will spend money on retail items from Macy’s, Banana Republic, Gap, and T.J. Maxx, but only if the items are something I absolutely need or at a deep discount.

 3. Where do you find inspiration for your outfits?
I look in ads I get in the mail and at the mannequins at the store.  I like to look at the mannequins on What Not To Wear because they put colors and textures together that I wouldn’t normally do.

 4. How do you figure out what you want to wear?
Mostly I just try to put together pieces from my closet in ways I haven’t done before; that way it looks like I have lots of clothes. (Actually, I
do have lots of clothes!)   I don’t buy “outfits."  The people I know who buy "outfits” never have anything to wear!  Sometimes I decide what I want to wear by starting with what shoes I want to wear.  Thank you, Franco Sarto…my favorite shoe brand!

5. Who are your style icons?
I’m out of touch on this one!  I guess I like these brands: Ann Taylor, I.N.C.  I like any clothing that’s made from nice, quality fabric.  I can spot a nice brand amid the junk usually found at a thrift store just by looking at hanger tops because nice fabric holds its color and doesn’t ball up like cheap or uber-trendy brands.

6. How do you want to see your style evolve this year? What risks do you want to take?
I want to get some of those skinny leg capris I saw at Gap and go for a retro summer look. I just bought a pair of skinny leg jeans and I’m getting used to them.  Maybe I’ll buy another pair?
