Essie's New Hit
I'm always on the hunt for the longest-lasting nail polish that looks good for days on end, despite the cans of La Croix I open, the makeup compacts I pry open, and general wear and tear. When Essie's new Gel Couture line released, I had to put it to the test.
Let's start with the pros. First, the color variety is incredible (I'm wearing Make the Cut in the photos above and have tried Pinned Up). Second, the polish really does last for more than ten days, usually without chipping. In fact, in the past this has lasted on me so long I've had to remove it because the growth where my nail bed meets my cuticles was too noticeable—but the tips of my nails were still in perfect condition.
There are a few cons to be mindful of. First, the lighter colors take two coats to be opaque, and it's almost impossible to apply the coats in a thin layer. The nature of the formula is quite thick, so applying two coats of the color plus the top coat makes the manicure look a little clunky and heavy. Second, the polish takes forever to dry. Between the base coat, the two coats of color, and the top coat, I'm finally done with my at-home manicure 1.5–2 hours—and even then I notice I can dent the polish up to 36 after I've applied it.
Despite the cons, though, I think the new line from Essie is worth a try, especially if longevity is important to you. Just make sure you give your nails plenty of dry time.
